Educating our community about waste minimisation, climate change, resource use, sustainability and renewable energy and energy efficiency.

NEC (Nelson Environment Centre) has been demonstrating leadership within the community on sustainability issues in Nelson for 30 years. Our role has always been to: provide education and information; develop projects; and support community initiatives.

Nelson Environment Centre is a not for profit, charitable incorporated society.

Our Mission is very simple: it’s our aim to make the Nelson region a model of sustainability.

We do this by working proactively with the people of Nelson to promote environmental awareness and facilitate environmentally sustainable initiatives.

We actively support a large number of projects.

Waster Education Services (WES) is a free service for businesses, schools or the public - provided through Nelson Environment Centre for Tasman District and Nelson City Councils.

Our Waste Education Service can help you discover all the ways you can reduce, re-use, and recycle your waste.

For a list of waste that can be reduced/reused/recycled in the Nelson region please see: www.wes.org.nz/Waste Service Providers.pdf

Re-Use Shops

NEC opened the Nelson Recycling Centre 17 years ago, and currently runs the Re-Use shops at the Transfer Station in Vivian St, Tahunanui. You can see what kind of treasures they have for sale, and place a bid for what is always a great deal! www.nec.org.nz/reuse

Lets Tackle Climate Change!  The Carbon Reduction Rewards Scheme is a web-based pledge scheme to help individuals, homeowners and businesses reduce their greenhouse gas emissions and win some great rewards donated by local businesses. www.codered.org.nz

Transition Nelson - Building community resilience. Transition Nelson is a community based initiative to aid the transition from a society using fossil fuels to a low carbon one. Its focus is to develop local community solutions in response to the global challenges of climate change and peak oil, and it is for anyone who wants to get together and do something about it! www.TransitionNelson.org.nz

The Sustainability Centre Environment park

We are currently embarking on an ambitious plan to create a 'one stop shop' sustainability centre for Nelson. The Centre will educate and demonstrate the latest sustainable living innovations. We'll be hosting workshops and events and have a large variety of permanent displays. We'll be working closely with school groups and members of the public to really show how to live in a sustainable way. Watch this space. www.nec.org.nz/sustainabilitycentre

The Sustainable Business Network represents more than 700 organisations nationally. The network promotes sustainable business practice through networking, practical advice, and resource and tool development.
